Today I started off my day with a healthy dose of anger. A manager where I work completely blew me off when I had something incredibly important come up that the manager needed to take care of. I had to overcome some pretty heavy political BS while serving in a combat zone and incompetent leadership is one of my triggers. There’s nothing I can do about it. I’m currently working on my resume because I can not stand working with people who do not care about their work. This isn’t the focus of the post though, just laying foundation for what really drove me nuts. I ran into some trouble financially it seemed today and I felt like I was getting pushed up against a wall again. This year I became debt free and something was now creeping up to challenge that. Oh HELL no.
I immediately started worrying, getting stressed out, losing focus, and wanting to punch things. The initial shock subsided and I told myself what I usually do when things start getting out of control: ”I’m not getting shot at, now calm down and get it dealt with.” The first thing I did was research what other people had done in my predicament. Google is your friend! I then asked the person who had saddled me with the information for advice. This gave me options. I researched those options, made some phone calls, and within an hour had resolved what I thought was going to ruin my summer. So here’s my tips:
1) Calm down! 2) Ask for advice / research the issue. 3) Make a decision. 4) Make a plan so that the situation doesn’t happen again.
Pretty straight forward but it helps to have a reminder, no?

I recently started working out regularly at a nearby BJJ dojo. North Broadway Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to be precise. I love martial arts and I was introduced to the place by a friend. I wanted to get back in shape, (don’t we all!?) and with this gym being between work and home it seemed a perfect fit. Due to me being a bit too energetic in a soccer match I bruised a rib and had to sit out after one week of workouts. Things worked out great though. I had already invested in a gym membership. The money was going to be coming out of my account whether I showed up or not. With that on my mind I put my hobbled body to use in the kitchen and on the computer. I talked to my trainer and local Supplement Superstore manager and started piecing together a meal plan. I discovered I wasn’t getting enough calories, specifically carbs. With this new knowledge I set out to work on putting a schedule together that would allow me reap the rewards of exercise once I was healthy again. This experience showed me some great steps to take to start a new workout program:
STOP – When you get home from work purge your activity list. Get a pad or paper or open a new word document. Start articulating what you want out of life, specifically in the realm of fitness for this particular situation. Take a deep breath, realize that change is a process, and push forward with the rest of these steps BEFORE running to the nearest gym.
Look at your schedule – Are you an evening worker like me? Maybe your classes all run 10-12 everyday of the week or you’re schedule is all over the place. Regardless of how your time gets dictated to you by your responsiblities you need to be realistic with yourself as to when you’re going to fit your exercise time in. Don’t just say you’re going to workout everyday and use your willpower to make sure it happens. You have to schedule it in or it’s just not going to set in. This means picking a gym or workout that is doable with your current schedule. Work undoubtly has to come first with family probably being your second time hog. Talk about your schedule with those involved and brainstorm when and how you can start having a workout be a regular part of your day. Don’t take away time from your sleep schedule! Get all eight of those precious hours!
Seek Guidance – There are people out there who know more than you. That’s a wonderful thing because we can seek the knowledge we want nowadays at the click of a button. I talked with my trainer and supplement wholesaler. They both told me the same things for my goal which made me feel confident in my direction. Plus, they’re both real fit guys which tells me they know what it takes to get fit.
Cook in bulk – Anyone who read my earlier posts about cooking in bulk (Yeah right, like I had readers.) will find that I’ve changed tactics. First thing I did was decide how many calories of each nutrient (protein, carbs) I needed per day. I then take that number and figure out how to reach each nutrient level by combining foods, i.e. chicken breasts, black beans, vegetables, rice, protein powders. For me personally, I grill up about 10 lbs of chicken breast. I put 1.5 breasts, chopped, into plastic freezer zip-lock bags. This, along with two protein shakes a day takes care of my protein intake. The shakes serve to be a great mid-meal between the regular breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I then throw in a 1 lb. bag of veggies. I switch it up to give myself variety. Then I’ll throw in a can of beans which is where I get a majority of my carbs, along with a bit of extra protein. The protein I eat is a blended protein so it’s got carbs in it as well. I was mistakenly using a low-carb protein which was leaving my brain crying for energy by lunch time. And that’s what I eat every day. I get the plastic bags all ready, throw some in the freezer and some in the fridge, and I make sure to have bowls and utensils ready for when and where I’ll be eating. It’s a great system. Using the plastic bags has cut down on my tupperware usage and has saved me a lot of time doing dishes.
Don’t go full bore yet! – I think this is important. You’ll probably be cleaning up your diet with new foods and putting your body through some sort of shift when it comes to your sleep patterns. This is going to be hell without you even lifting a weight. If you’re starting up anyway, go very light on the exercise. I was hurt so I didn’t do anything at all. This allows your body to get used to the things you have to be consciously mindful about. Anyone can convince themselves to work hard in the gym but it’s a true test of willpower to get yourself up out of bed after your fifth day of working your ass off. I say give it a week before you start hitting it hard so you convince your body that this is the way things are now.
Now go! – Don’t look back. Take some initial measurements and weighings but don’t focus on them. Write the stats down and forget about them for a month. Just focus on doing the right thing. The results you want are going to come from hard work, preparation, and proper health choices during your off time. Going to get off work late? Plan accordingly by having a shake meal ready, a light workout planned, and don’t skimp on the sleep. Friends calling you to go out? Hydrate up, keep the drinking to a minimum, and responsibly leave when it’s time for you to get rest. You’ll find that fitness success comes more from balance than constant work.
Best of luck on your future workout goals! If you have any questions feel free to email me or leave a comment!

One thing I hear thrown around a lot towards atheists is the notion that they have no purpose. The worst comments I’ve witnessed are something close to, “You don’t live for anything and have no purpose, so why don’t you just kill yourself?” That’s a disturbing thought-process that lead to that idea. It seems that having a purpose in/to life is very important for a lot of people and a good chunk of those people think it comes from a higher level of existence, i.e. a deity.
I’ve talked about this before with friends and I’ve seen nothing that convinces me we don’t choose our own purpose(s), regardless of our stance on the supernatural. Say, for instance, your family business is selling ice cream and one of your elders suffered severe diabetes and had a deteriorated state of health during old age. This may cause you to shift your perception on what is more important in life and how to help others make better health decisions. Or maybe your sister dies of cancer and it moves you to help those afflicted with the same disease in her honor. These are some extreme examples but isn’t the purpose we feel we have an extreme of ourselves? A person doesn’t suddenly wake up and have a purpose that has no connection to them whatsoever. Something in that person’s life pushed them to bare that mantle. Some may view that epiphany moment as divine intervention, but with a slice of Occam’s Razor we can postulate that the idea was already building inside them and reached a motivation level breaking point.
Purposes can change too. Batons can get passed, boredom can set in, and new opportunities present themselves. That’s one of the beautiful things about life. The past is settled but the future decisions we make are numerous. We do not know what struggles will show up on our doorstep tomorrow but they will shape our future. It may be slight or it may be life-altering but our lives and choices shape our self-given purpose. Who knows, maybe your tireless effort towards what you deem important will inspire hundreds to rally to your banner!
So don’t get all wrapped up on finding your purpose in life. Keep doing what makes you happy and fulfilled and you’ll most likely discover you’ve been fulfilling “your purpose” for quite some time.

It is! Scout’s honor!
I grew up going to a church and being raised by my conservative, albeit wishy-washy believing grandparents. They’re Mom and Day to me but I wanted to emphasize the generational difference. I was constantly around people who extolled the virtues or hurrying up and bagging a mate. Existing as a single person was always discussed as being this temporary, horrible time period in a person’s life. Getting out of that hole was to be top priority it seemed and I personally hated being “alone” growing up. What a crappy way to view life!
If you’re reading this and you’re single…HIGH FIVE BUDDY! We answer to ourselves, we make our own plans, and we never have to feel bad about checking out, flirting, and hooking up with the opposite sex. We are the dog damn pirates of 1st world civilization! Still not convinced? Try…
Planning a trip! - Save a little money and just go somewhere. Ask for a day off and jump in the car on a whim. Go to a baseball game, go hiking at a state park, visit that cool museum upstate, whatever! Don’t forget to inform your…Oh yeah, you don’t answer to anyone!
Chasing tail! – This goes for both sexes. I know some people are shy but think about this. You can go out and flirt with whomever you want right now. If they’re into you they’ll reciprocate, if not, WHO CARES! There are people all over the place. Heck, find a date on your trip and that’s double points!
Rearranging the house! - Don’t like where the couch is? Hell, put it on the ceiling! You’re not waiting for someone to get home so you can have a democratic meeting about how the place should look when you throw a wine and cheese party. When you get back from your trip everything will be right where you left it!
Getting shit done! - Special others demand time. That’s time you won’t get back. So while your friends are sitting through the latest in-law visit, drapery color matching extravaganza, or sparkly vampire movie you are getting what you want done. Single people have more time to workout, pursue hobbies, play sports, hoot ‘n holler, go to school, pursue a career, and [insert just about anything.]
The list is endless.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to take my dog to the park, throw my clothes on the floor, leave dishes in the sink, and hog my entire bed.

You’re making your way through the office after a healthy lunch, looking forward to that new workout routine you’ve got scheduled for after work. Just as you make it to your work station that sweetheart of a girl from down the hall ambushes you with her smile.
“We saved you some of my birthday cake!” She says with her eyes lit up with the joy of offering someone sweet goodness.
“No thanks,” you quickly blurt out. There’s no question in your mind that this cake doesn’t belong in your body. But her smile does not falter…
“One little piece won’t hurt!”
My birthday is coming up and this post seems appropriate, given that people love giving others sugar on their birthday. In some instances I think it’s downright rude. If you know someone well enough to be preparing well in advance for their birthday, you would probably know if they’re working their ass off towards fitness goals. Don’t sabotage the good thing they have going! The one little piece does hurt. It destroys the dam of willpower the person has built up in his brain to eat healthier. That one little crack can cause the entire thing to come crashing down. The cake leads to punch which leads to candy, cookies, alcohol, etc. Do not be the person sabotaging your friend on an important personal fitness journey. Here are some suggestions if you really want to make something for their special occasion.
Chicken or tuna salad on crackers. Use olive oil or hot sauces to give the meat flavor instead of mayonaisse. Put on top of whole wheat crackers and garnish with a slice of olive, tomato, cucumber, or other favorite vegetable.
Peanut butter and celery. Pretty simple. Add raisins and/or almonds for ants-on-a-log flavoring.
Yogurt with fruit. Yum! Make smoothies with skim milk and ice!
Fruit kabobs. Go to the store and pick up some chop sticks. Slice up some fruit and start making kabobs!
Newtons. I love these. Try using these instead of cake or cupcakes!
I got hungry just typing that out. These are just a few delicious and healthier alternatives for that special occasion where sugar will only cause regret later on.

Sometimes you like an idea but you look back and you see that you took it in a direction you wish you hadn’t or you want to move in a different one but you can’t. Both of those things happened so I’ve decided to start this blog over. I’m hoping to stick to these topics:
Humanism: Philosphy, technology, and human life.
Health: Fitness, nutrition, emotional and physical well-being
St. Louis: This is my new home and I want to showcase those topics above as they apply to it.
Life Coaching: This is a completely new project that I’m still working on but I plan on running a local life coaching business from this website.
I will try to focus on these things because I did a poor job of it on my last attempt. I will leave the debating, satire, and fist-pounding to those blogs that already accomplish so much in those realms.
